What does the NFL and NBA lockout mean?

I am TOTALLY confused. I am a girl, and im not that much into sports so when i googled it all i got was like coach names and whatnot. I was all confizzled. :P So, what does this mean? What happened? and, will it have a major effect on someone like me, whos not into professional sport speculating?
