Is it possible for your coach to take away your football scholarship after you've already signed up college?

My boyfriend talked to his coach, asking for every other weekend off. The coach asked why and he said to see my girlfriend. The coach asked which is more important, your own team or your girlfriend? He said my girlfriend. The coach said you know I can take away your football scholarship right now? He said yes and walked away. Now he has to pay 16k by the end of the first semester. He can't attend classes unless he pays the full 32k. He can't get a student loan because they already went out. Is there something that he could do? I don't view that as very fair. They shouldn't ask him to mandatorily pay that. So is there anything he can do?
